All About Minoxidil

A Topical Hair Loss Treatment

Hair loss is a condition that affects approximately 35 million men in the United States. Due to the prevalence of this condition, it has led to the development of various solutions to try and give people the hair that they desire. One of these solutions, and one of the two prescription options that are approved by the FDA, is Minoxidil.

What is Minoxidil?

Minoxidil, also known as Rogaine, is the two prescription options that have been approved for use by the FDA. It is also the only topical treatment that has been approved for both men and women to purchase over the counter.

Developed in the late 1950s, this drug was originally being tested as a way to treat ulcers. Although it wasn’t effective for that purpose, researchers did find that it functioned as a vasodilator which led to its original FDA approval in 1963. Over 20 years later was when researchers discovered another purpose for Minoxidil, hair growth. Discovered as a side-effect of the use of Minoxidil, the result of hair growth led to an FDA approval to use Rogaine in order to treat baldness in 1988.

How Does it Work?

Interestingly, it isn’t completely understood why Minoxidil causes hair growth to occur. Among researchers, the most common reasoning for its effectiveness has been linked to the drug being a vasodilator and potassium channel opener. Due to follicles needing oxygen and nutrients from the blood, doctors believe that by the blood vessels widening more blood is able to reach the area where Rogaine is being applied. This influx of nutrients stimulates the follicles, allowing them to grow thicker hair resulting in a fuller head of hair.

Is it Effective?

Minoxidil comes in two strengths, 2% and 5%, and while both formulas have been shown to be effective in stimulating hair growth, they aren’t a cure to baldness. On average, 2 out of 3 men will see results using Rogaine, but in order to maintain those results, the drug must see continued use. Once the use of the product has been stopped hair loss will begin once again and it may begin happening faster than it was before.

Minoxidil Side Effects

Like any medication that is considered safe, there is the potential for side effects from using Rogaine. When used, doctors have observed side effects such as:

  • Increased hair shedding as new hair growth pushes the old hair out of follicles
  • Scalp irritation
  • Changes in hair texture and color
  • Hair growth in unwanted areas

Choose the Right Hair Loss Solution for You

While there are various hair loss solutions to choose from, not all of them deliver the same results and will be the right choice for your needs.
