The Top Ten Reasons for Hair Loss

There are many reasons for hair loss in men.

Hair loss is a prominent and common problem for many people of all ages. Hair loss can occur for a variety of reasons, leaving you feeling insecure and lacking confidence. There are a variety of reasons that your hair may begin to fall out or become thin.

Genetic Reasons

This can play a huge role in whether you begin to lose your hair. Androgenetic alopecia is related to age and is hereditary. It is very common, it begins in youth and progresses as we age. For women, the hair part widens and becomes thinner. For men, the balding often is at the temples then to thinning at the top of the head.

Age

This is another common factor in the loss of hair. It’s a natural process and as we age, our cells begin to die off quicker than they can regenerate. Not only does our hair color change as our follicles make less melanin, but our hair thickness and rate of growth also change! Hair strands become smaller and more brittle as we produce less and less oil. Many men start showing signs of balding as early as 30 years old.

Hormones

Hormonal changes can also be the cause of your hair loss. For women, this hair loss may come with the addition of birth control pills that use hormonal treatment. Or, conditions like Polycystic ovary syndrome, which can cause hair loss in women. As more research is released, studies show that fluctuating testosterone levels may cause hair loss as well. This depends upon if your testosterone levels are too high or low. However, it’s mostly the sensitivity of your hair to the effects of testosterone that may decide if it results in thinning or balding

Autoimmune Disease

If you suffer from an autoimmune disease, this could be a contributing factor to hair loss and thinning. This type is called alopecia areata and can be caused by various diseases like Diabetes and Lupus. This type of hair loss may or may not be permanent.

Nutritional Deficiencies

If you are not eating the right amount of a balanced diet, then your body and its functions will suffer. Poor nutrition can heavily affect our body’s ability to have a healthy growth of hair, skin, and nails. There are a variety of foods to eat that can boost your hair health. Some of which include oysters, walnuts, and whey protein, improving thickness, texture, and reducing hair loss.

Stress

Stress and stressful events could be the cause behind thinning and loss of hair. One type of hair loss associated with this is Telogen effluvium, which is a type of hair loss that pushes hair follicles into a “resting phase” these hair strands may eventually completely fall out. The second type is Trichotillomania the urge to pull out one’s hair from their body as a possible way of dealing with negative feelings. The last is alopecia areata, which can be worsened by server stress.

Medications

Certain medications could also be the issue behind your hair experiencing fallout. This is caused by the medications interfering with your body’s natural scalp hair growth. The medications can cause hair follicles to go to the resting phase and fall out too early. The other type prevents the matrix cells from dividing and can occur pretty immediately after taking a medication.

Hair Care

Your hair care routine can actually be attributed to your hair damage and fall out. If you’re using something that irritates and damages your hair follicles this can disrupt your growth. Also, you may be allergic to certain products that can cause rashes and fall out. Be mindful of using too many products that interfere with your hair`s natural cycle.

Infections

Infections can also cause hair loss and damage.  Different types of infections like ringworm which reach the hair fibers and make hair break easily, as well as other fungal infections. Folliculitis is another infection causing inflammation of the hair follicles.

Sleep

Sleep can also be an attributing factor to hair loss. Sleep and the amount of sleep you get can affect the levels of hormones in your body, the human growth hormone is produced in sleep cycles. Lower levels of HGH can cause thinning of hair. Also, lack of sleep adds to stress levels.
